Parents and adolescents often report parenting differently. These parent-adolescent discrepancies in reports of parenting have been shown to associate with adolescent developmental outcomes (e.g., depression and anxiety). Therefore, investigating the factors that might be the antecedents and consequences of these discrepancies would be beneficial for protecting adolescents from maladaptive development. One such factor might be perspective-taking, or the tendency to adopt other people’s psychological viewpoints. This tendency might help parents and adolescents narrow their differences in perceptions of parenting behaviors and thus in reports of parenting. Also, parent-adolescent discrepancies in reports of parenting might reflect the conditions that facilitate or hinder parents’ and adolescent’ perspective-taking. In this study, we will examine such bidirectional associations across adolescence on a sample of Dutch mothers and adolescents who reported on maternal support and behavioral control and their perspective-taking.
